The New York Yankees have made the first big move of the MLB offseason, acquiring left-handed hitting superstar Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres late Wednesday evening. It’s a move that is sure to shake up the baseball world.
Ever since Soto made his big league debut as an 18-yeqr-old in the Washington Nationals’ World Series-winning 2018 season, he has been an absolute phenom. The 24-year-old seems destined for Cooperstown with a chance to climb into the top ten in many statistical categories by the end of his career.
Through his age 24 season, he has 160 home runs, 483 RBI, 687 hits, and a slash line of .284/.410/.521. Yeah, that’s pretty good.
Soto spent his first four-and-a-half years in Washington before being traded to the Padres at the 2022 trade deadline for a huge prospect haul. But, despite an NLCS appearance in 2022, the loaded Padres could never break through. And, with Soto set for free agency after the 2024 season, it made sense for the Padres to try to get some prospects back for him if they didn’t have plans to resign him.
And, that’s what they did, albeit it was young major league pitching talent that was the centerpiece of the deal.
Full trade, per ESPN sources:
Yankees receive: outfielders Juan Soto and Trent Grisham.
Padres receive: right-handed pitchers Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Randy Vasquez, Jhony Brito and catcher Kyle Higashioka.@Joelsherman1 was on top of the deal.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 7, 2023
Fresh off missing the playoffs, this is a huge move for general manager Brian Cashman and the New York Yankees. Soto provides a lefty power bat and OBP monster that should thrive in the 81 home games with the short right field porch in Yankee Stadium. Giving Aaron Judge some protection in the lineup should only make both of those superstars better.
And, to commemorate the trade, the New York Daily News had an awesome cover ready to go to put on the newsstand Thursday morning. Take a look.
