During a recent appearance on Jon Bernthal’s Real Ones podcast, former New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman addressed the recent rumors that future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady could return to the team for one final season next year.
Edelman addressed the speculation while also discussing whether or not he could consider returning to the Patriots, as the 36-year-old pass-catcher went into retirement following the 2020 season.
“Am I coming back? I don’t know. I’m probably not gonna come back. We’ll see. I heard there’s a hundred million in the cap next year for the Patriots. We’ll see how that paycheck’s looking,” Edelman told actor Jon Bernthal during a recent interview.
“And, you know, I heard — there is a couple of rumors that Brady might be going over there. You know, might be going back. You never know.”
It’s certainly easy to see why the talk of Brady returning to New England is heating up, as both he and the Patriots are clearly missing each other, at least as far as the on-the-field results are concerned.
Brady’s Bucs are currently just 6-8 and are only making the playoffs by virtue of the NFC South being the worst division in the National Football League. The Patriots, on the other hand, currently sit at 7-7 (and will likely miss out on the playoffs entirely), largely due to the play of second-year quarterback Mac Jones, who has struggled mightily during his sophomore season.
With the aging Bucs clearly in need of a rebuild and the Patriots in need of a quarterback, perhaps Brady and Belichick can put their differences aside for one final run in 2023 before they both ride off into the sunset of retirement. Plus, given his divorce from Gisele, it’s hard to imagine that Brady would go through all of that personal turmoil only to then re-retire just a year later, especially after the disappointing season the Bucs have had.
