It wasn’t all that long ago that Justin Thomas was one of the most feared golfers in the world. The two-time major champion was seemingly always in contention at the majors.
But, since his last major win, the 2022 PGA Championship, Justin Thomas has been dreadful at majors. That continued on Thursday during the first round of the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No. 2.
Justin Thomas struggled mightily Thursday morning. He fired a +7 77, making just two birdies and carding nine bogeys.

Since his last major championship, his best major finish is tied for 8th at the PGA Championship last month in his hometown of Louisville. Outside of that, he had a T37, a T53, a T65, and four missed cuts.
That’s not up to the standards of a player who is as talented as he is. The former world number one should be in the prime of his career at 31-years old. Instead, Justin Thomas is more of an also-ran at most major championships these days.
After the round, Justin Thomas spent some time on the range to try to salvage what was left of his week. And, his good friend Tiger Woods joined him to give him some pointers.

Tiger could’ve used some pointers himself today. The fifteen-time major champion shot a +4 74 after a hot start that saw him -1 and tied for the lead through six holes.
