The living, breathing soap opera that is the Brooklyn Nets kicked off their 2022-23 season on Tuesday night and got absolutely stomped at home by the New Orleans Pelicans, losing the game by a score of 130-108.
Despite the fact that the Nets entered the season as one of the top betting favorites to win the NBA title — alongside the Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Clippers — Brooklyn was thoroughly trounced by the Pelicans, largely due to the fact that controversial guards Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons were basically no-shows.
Irving, who reportedly tried to force his way out of Brooklyn this summer alongside Kevin Durant, scored just 15 points while providing five assists and two rebounds. Then, Ben Simmons — who the Nets traded for last season — in his long-awaited debut for the team put up a CLASSIC Ben Simmons stat line: four points, five assists, five rebounds, and SIX fouls, which fouled him out of the game.
Given how much of the basketball world seems to generally like Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons — and therefore the Nets in general — NBA fans were quick to hop on Twitter to dunk on the pair of controversial and underperforming former All-Stars.
NBA fans crush Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons for their performances in the Brooklyn Nets’ first game of the 2022-23 season

Given the volatility of the team, the Brooklyn Nets are undoubtedly going to be one of the most fascinating storylines of the NBA season as they teeter between championship contention and complete implosion.
The Brookyln Nets will continue their start to the 2022-23 season on Friday night when they take on the Toronto Raptors at the Barclays Center.
