Mattress Mack is at it again. The furniture store mogul has placed his latest big bet at the sportsbooks.
This time, he’s backing his hometown college basketball team, placing a massive $1M wager on the Houston Cougars to win the national title. At 8-to-1 odds, an $8M payout is on the line.
Mattress Mack shouldn’t be hurting for money following a historic win in the World Series. He’s fresh off of a $75M payday thanks to the Astros’ win over the Phillies this past October. That win was the largest in the history of legal sports betting.
Now, he’s putting his hard-earned money down on the fifth-ranked Cougars, who’ve jumped out to a 9-1 start to the 2022 campaign. The bet was actually the first placed at Caesar’s new Horseshoe Hotel and Casino location in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Mattress Mack isn’t the only one riding with Houston this March. The Cougars are currently slotted as the favorite at most sportsbooks to bring home the title this NCAA Tournament.
What he’s hoping doesn’t happen is a reverse effect. The big money bettor has a reputation as a jinx based on flops by many of his past selections.
Prior to last year’s World Series win, Mack saw major losses in college football, the Kentucky Derby, and the Super Bowl. He also took a massive L when his Astros fell in the 2019 World Series against the Washington Nationals.
Maybe his latest World Series victory helped turn the tides, breaking that streak of large financial losses. He’ll need the Houston Cougars to live up to the lofty expectations set forth in 2022, but if they succeed, Mattress Mack will walk away another $8M richer.
