Michael Vick picked up his first college football victory on Saturday. Norfolk State defeated Virginia State in overtime behind some late-game heroics from backup quarterback Otto Kuhns.
That leaves the 45-year-old NFL legend with his first difficult decision as a first-year head coach.
Vick must choose between two signal-callers with two very different college football backgrounds. Is it time to replace Israel Carter with Otto Kuhns?!
Michael Vick initially tapped Israel Carter as QB1.
There was a lot of buzz about Israel Carter prior to the start of the season. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound redshirt sophomore transferred to Norfolk State during the offseason after two years at South Florida.
Carter provides a dual-threat option for the Spartans. He received high praise from Vick after spring ball. He won the starting job during fall camp.
However, the former four-star recruit could not get anything going during his debut. Carter completed only two passes for 21 yards against Towson and struggled to move the ball downfield.
As a result, Vick went to Kuhns after three-straight punts. He threw for 219 yards on 19 completions during a 20-point loss in the season-opener.
Otto Kuhns keeps producing.
Even though Otto Kuhns played much better than Carter against Towson, Vick stuck with his guy for Week 2. The latter was once again named as QB1 over the former against Virginia State.
That lasted more than 45 minutes on Saturday… until Michael Vick made the switch, again.
Kuhns entered the game in the fourth quarter and led the Spartans on three-straight scoring drives to tie the game at 31. He also led the game-winning drive in overtime.
Carter finished the game 10-of-16 for 80 yards with 10 carries for 27 yards. Kuhns finished the game 13-of-20 for 173 yards and two touchdowns with five carries for 23 yards.
Is it time to make the switch?
Norfolk State will play at Rutgers this weekend. It will be Michael Vick’s first game against a Power-Four opponent and he has a decision to make at quarterback.
I would imagine that we are going to see both guys in some capacity, but Otto Kuhn has out-played Israel Carter to this point. I am very curious to see who gets the start.
This is the first big decision for Vick!
