Former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum appeared on Get Up! this morning to discuss the appeal of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ vacant head coaching position. While discussing the opening with a panel, Tannenbaum compared the Jacksonville Jaguars to an NBA dynasty.
Tannenbaum took his opportunity this morning to say that the Jaguars’ opening at head coach is “historically great”. This opinion was based on Trevor Lawrence’s contract, some key players returning from injury next season, and one potential signing.
He proceeded to claim that this coaching hire would resemble one of the most important hires made in recent NBA history.

Even the rest of the panel was stunned by Tannenbaum’s assertion. It’s not hard to see why. The Jaguars are not the same as the Golden State Warriors team who hired Steve Kerr.
First of all, Trevor Lawrence has shown no signs of living up to his potential in his first NFL season. Lawrence has thrown 1 touchdown pass in the Jags’ last 7 games. Yes, having a quarterback on a rookie contract is an advantage, but it means a lot less when that QB isn’t producing.
Then there’s the matter of Davante Adams. First of all, the Green Bay Packers could franchise tag Adams and keep him from ever hitting the open market. Second, why would Adams choose Jacksonville over every other receiver needy team in the NFL?
If your assessment of this job is based on the idea that Davante Adams will be a Jaguar next year, then you really need to reconsider your stance.
I understand that Trevor Lawrence is probably a more appealing asset than anything Tannenbaum ever had to work with as GM of the Jets, but this Jacksonville Jaguars team is far from becoming anything close to the Golden State Warriors.
