Patrick Mahomes sure is a smart guy, don’t you think? It’s one thing to be able to dominate opposing defenses like he does on the football field — while doing backyard-type plays that blow fans’ minds — or reading blitzes and aligning his offensive line the right way to protect him. But it’s another thing when he actually listens to the greatest quarterback to ever live, Tom Brady, when the six-time Super Bowl champ offers up some advice.

After losing in heartbreaking fashion in the AFC Championship Game to Brady’s New England Patriots last season, Patrick Mahomes talked about some of the things that the future Hall of Famer had to say to him — which seemed to really stick. Now that Mahomes has led his Chiefs to Super Bowl 54 against the San Francisco 49ers, the reigning league MVP is talking about how Brady’s words of wisdom helped keep him focus all of this season, which led to redemption by reaching the Big Game this year.

While talking to the media following his team’s victory over the Tennessee Titans in this season’s AFC Title Game, Mahomes explained how Brady’s advice after the devastation of last season’s loss helped keep him focus all year long. Take a look below.

As a sports fan, you’ve got to admire this sort of honesty from a 24-year-old like Patrick Mahomes, who, in just his second season as the Chiefs starter, is being praised as the next big thing in the NFL. Rather than get a big head and blow Brady’s encouraging words off and do things his own way, Mahomes paid close attention to a guy who has six Super Bowl rings on his fingers — which, you know, happens to be a pretty wise move.

Although Brady doesn’t often share many of his secrets to success, real recognizes real, so he seemed to pass the torch a little bit by telling Mahomes his thoughts after last year’s conference title game. And, for being so open to the advice, the young quarterback stored that as motivation to reach the Super Bowl this season. That’s pretty awesome stuff.
