In case you’ve been living under a rock, there’s something pretty special going on in the small town of Wrexham, Wales.
The town, which has of population of just over 60,000, is home to soccer club Wrexham A.F.C.
The Red Dragons have always been a small club, competing in the lower tiers of the English football league system.
They were in the fifth tier of the system, The National League, in 2020 when superstar actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased the club.
That led to investment unlike the club had ever seen before. It also led to the FX docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham”, which created new fans across the world.
This season, Wrexham is been trying to earn promotion back into League Two (which, ironically, is the fourth tier of pyramid). To do so it would have to win the National League.
The Red Dragons entered Monday’s game against Notts County FC tied with their opponents in first place with just five matches remaining.
It was an insane, back-and-forth game which saw Notts taking a 1-0 lead before Wrexham battled back to go ahead 2-1 in the second half. Notts County tied the game in the 75th minute, but Elliott Lee’s goal in the 78th put the Red Dragons back on top.
It appeared Wrexham was headed to victory, but a late foul gave Notts a penalty kick with a chance to tie the match late in stoppage time.

Former England national team goalkeeper Ben Foster, who is now 40 years old, made an incredible save to preserve the victory for Wrexham.
Reynolds lost his mind, throwing his fits into the air as McElhenney celebrated wildly as well. After the game Reynolds had this to say…
"That was unlike anything I've ever seen before!!" 🔥

“I don’t feel like I have a heart anymore. I think I used all the beats that I had left during that match. That was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before,” Reynolds said. “…I’m actually grateful that I didn’t care about (soccer) years ago, because it would’ve just eaten me alive.”
Wrexham are now three points clear of Notts at the top of the table with four games remaining and a game in hand.
Should they win the league, the Red Dragons would re-enter what’s considered “league football” (the top four tiers) for the first time since the 2007-2008 season.
