Luka Doncic is on a mission to get in shape ahead of Year 2 with the Los Angeles Lakers. He might be doing so to spite his previous organization for betting against him.

The NBA superstar has reportedly shed a ton of weight, evidenced in offseason photos. The team has him on a strict diet following concerns dating back to his days in Dallas.

The Mavericks shocked the basketball world last year by trading Doncic to a Western Conference rival. Care for his body was reportedly a tipping point.

The Mavericks’ bet against Doncic due to what sources told ESPN’s Tim MacMahon were concerns over his conditioning and the potential supermax contract he’d be eligible to sign this summer is the biggest takeaway from as big of a trade as the NBA has seen in quite some time. Doncic has been limited to 22 games this season and hasn’t played more than 70 in a season since his rookie year.

He was said to have ballooned to more than 260 pounds. Rather than reward him with a $345 million supermax contract, GM Nico Harrison cut bait.

Since arriving in LA, Doncic has been shedding weight at an incredible rate. The Lakers are ensuring that continues.

Skinny Luke Doncic set to star in Los Angeles.

Photos of the guard have been circulating social media throughout the offseason. His weight loss journey has been on full display.

That’s been seen in media outings, sporting appearances, and vacation updates.

Luka Doncic plays at around 230 pounds according to his NBA bio. His 6-foot-6 frame can easily carry it. Los Angeles is not taking the risk of watching that weight skyrocket following the negative headlines in Dallas.

Dan Woike of The Athletic says the Lakers have him on a strict diet and conditioning program. It represents a shift from the norm, as he stepped away from on-court training in order to make his physique priority No. 1.

If he’s able to keep his weight down, it could lead to longevity on the court. Doncic played just 50 games last year. He’s failed to exceed 66 games in six of his last seven campaigns.

Los Angeles put their eggs the basket when making the deal for Luka Doncic. They’ll do what’s necessary to ensure that investment pays off.
