Tour De France Star Primoz Roglic Tells Opponent That He ‘Doesn’t Care’ About Legendary Race

At one point in his career, Primoz Roglic was the main attraction of Tour de France. Roglic, a five-time grand tour winner, led the majority of the 2020 Tour before losing in heartbreaking fashion on the second-to-last day to countryman Tadej Pogacar.

Since then, Roglic has tried and failed on numerous occasions to win cycling’s crown jewel. But several crashes and misfortunes seem to have beaten the love of the Tour de France out of the 35-year-old Slovenian.

After leaving longtime team Visma-Lease a Bike, Roglic now rides for German outfit Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. He led the team in the Giro d’Italia earlier this season, but yet again had to abandon the race before the finish due to a crash. Now he’s yet again leading the team, this time at the Tour de France, but he doesn’t sound too excited about it.

According to Jayco-AlUla rider Luke Plapp, Roglic told him during an earlier stage that he doesn’t care about his Tour result.

“Roglic told me twice that he doesn’t care. And that’s absolutely true,” Plapp said on the Stanley St. Social podcast. “When he told me, I asked (Roglic’s teammate) Laurence Pithie if Roglic was selling me nonsense. They don’t pay him 4.5 million a year to tell the media he doesn’t give a d—, do they? But he really doesn’t care; he’s not interested. When Jonas or Pogi attack, he doesn’t react at all; he just does his own thing.”

If true, that’s a pretty bad look for Roglic, and I can’t imagine his team is very happy. But it’s also understandable given his history. And for somebody who’s not trying, Roglic is riding pretty well. He currently sits in ninth position through seven stages. But he’s more than three minutes behind race-leader and defending champion Pogacar.
