Trevor Lawrence was supposed to be the chosen one. The Cartersville, Georgia product was the top overall recruit in the country in the 2018 class. And, he instantly led Clemson to a national title in a blowout win against Alabama.
He took Clemson back to the title game and to the semifinals of the College Football playoff his final two years for Dabo Swinney’s Tigers. And, he was picked first overall by then-coach Urban Meyer and the Jaguars in the 2021 NFL draft.
But, last year’s Jaguars season was a disaster for Trevor Lawrence. Urban Meyer created a sideshow atmosphere that harmed the team and the young franchise quarterback. Lawrence completed under 60% of his passes for just 12 touchdowns against 17 interceptions. It was fair to say it was a lost year of development for him under Meyer.
But, in the offseason, they brought in former Super Bowl Champion Coach Doug Pederson. He’s always been good with quarterbacks, and had Carson Wentz playing at an MVP level.
The Jaguars started 2-1. But, they lost five straight one-score games to go to 2-6, and it looked like they would be picking high in the draft again. They’ve gotten hot recently, though, as they have won four of six and are right back in the thick of things in the AFC South, just one game back of the Titans. And, they control their own destiny, as they play Tennessee again and own the tiebreaker if they beat them.
Trevor Lawrence’s strong performance is one reason why. And, it must be asked if he is now among the league’s elite quarterbacks.
Trevor Lawrence has been outplaying everyone recently, including Patrick Mahomes
The Jags have been red hot, and had a huge come-from-behind win against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday to get to 6-8. When you see these Lawrence stats, you will understand why.

That is some tremendous quarterbacking. It’s easy to forget that he only recently turned 23 because of how long he has been in the public eye. But, he’s younger than a lot of rookies and is playing as one of the league’s best quarterbacks. If there was an NFL Most Improved Player Award like in in the NBA, he would probably win.
This chart shows just how much he has improved, and it doesn’t even include Sunday’s heroic performance.

The Jaguars look to keep it going next week as they take on another surprise team in the Jets on Thursday Night Football.
