The Minnesota Vikings officially announced the release of former All-Pro linebacker Eric Kendricks, after eight seasons with the team.
Kendricks, a 2015 second round pick, was a key player for the Vikings defense in his career. Kendricks has been a Pro Bowler, team captain, a Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee, and a leader of the Vikings social justice efforts.
Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah acknowledged Kendricks’ contributions, stating that “Eric leaves a powerful, permanent legacy within our organization and the Minnesota community.”
During his time with the Vikings, Kendricks played in 117 games, starting in 113 of them. He was a first-team All-Pro in 2019 and has been the Vikings leading tackler. In 2022, he recorded 137 tackles, eight tackles for loss, a sack, and six passes defensed.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell praised Kendricks’ impact on the team both on and off the field, saying that “his tireless work ethic set a standard for others to emulate.”
By releasing Kendricks, the Vikings will save $9.5 million in cap space with $1.93 million in dead money. With just one season remaining on his contract, Kendricks is now eligible to sign with any team.
The release of Eric Kendricks is a significant move for the Minnesota Vikings, as they part ways with a respected and talented player who had a major impact on their defense. Nevertheless, the team appears to be focused on rebuilding their defense, and this move will provide them with much-needed cap space as they look towards the future.
