The Washington Commanders, formerly known as the Washington Football Team, formerly known as the Washington Redskins, are down bad. After their fourth former staffer became a head coach for another organization on Sunday, they look awfully foolish.
By now, you have heard about Washington’s 2012 coaching staff. It included Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, and Matt LaFleur.
Shanahan, the former Washington offensive coordinator, is now the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.
McVay, the former Washington tight ends coach, is now the head coach of the NFC champion Los Angeles Rams.
LaFluer, the former Washington quarterbacks coach, is now the head coach of the Green Bay Packers.
All three coaches are 42 years old or younger and all three are considered some of the best offensive and overall minds in the game. All three coaches could have been the head coach in Washington but all three coaches were allowed to walk.
On Sunday, that list of three grew to four.
The Miami Dolphins hired 38-year-old Mike McDaniel to be the team’s new head coach on Sunday. McDaniel, who was most recently the offensive coordinator with the 49ers under Shanahan, was also on Washington’s 2012 staff.

From 2011-2013, McDaniel worked with the Washington organization as an offensive assistant at first and then was elevated to wide receivers coach. After 2013, he left Washington for a lateral move with Cleveland and spent time in Atlanta before becoming the run game coordinator and ultimately the offensive coordinator in San Francisco.
Meanwhile, Washington has three head coaches in that same span and all three of them had or have losing records.
- Jay Gruden, 2014-2019: 35 wins, 49 losses, 1 tie.
- Bill Callahan, 2019: 3 wins, 8 losses.
- Ron Rivera, 2020-present: 14 wins, 19 losses.
Rivera’s time with the organization is limited, so there is a chance that he could turn the Commanders around. However, Washington could have had McVay, LaFleur, McDaniel or Shanahan if they could have kept any of the three in town.
Mike McDaniel was on that same 2012 Washington offensive staff as LaFleur, McVay, and Kyle Shanahan— making four current NFL head coaches on one staff from ten years ago.
