Wichita State has launched an internal investigation surrounding head men’s basketball coach Gregg Marshall and his behavior after rather disturbing allegations were made against the 57-year-old.
Former players Shaq Morris and Ty Taylor spoke to Stadium detailing allegations. Morris alleged that Marshall shoved and punched him during practice during the 2015-16 season. Morris had just told Marshall that his mom had been diagnosed with cancer.
“Shaq walks away and Marshall punches him in the back of the head,” a former player said. “I’m in disbelief. He’s done flagrant stuff, but that was probably the reason I (transferred). I lost respect for him as a man. The worst part is that Shaq had told Marshall earlier that day that his mom had cancer.”
One former assistant also told Stadium that “he’s a maniac, a bully” and “brings up personal stuff, family, girlfriends.”
The report also details allegations of him placing his hands around a staff members neck during that same season. Another allegation involved Marshall berating a student-athlete from another sport in which he tried to punch him through the driver’s side window of a car because the student had parked in Marshall’s parking space.
“It wasn’t just players — the academic people, the marketing, everybody. If you had to associate with Wichita State basketball, you got caught in the crossfire,” one former player said to The Athletic. “I lost respect for him because I saw the way he treated my teammates and other people.”
Wichita State saw a total of six scholarship players and one walk-on transfer from the program after the most recent season.
Marshall has coached at Wichita State for 13 seasons where he has posted a 525-204 record and led the Shockers to a Final Four appearance during the 2012-13 season.
