Xander Schauffele earned the right to celebrate after topping the field at The British Open last month, but he also found himself dealing with the consequences that come with drinking heavily for three straight days in your 30s as a result.

Scottie Scheffler was predictably the favorite to win The British Open when it headed to Royal Troon, but Xander Schaufelle managed to throw a very interesting twist in the debate concerning the golfer who’s had the best year by securing the Claret Jug with a two-stroke victory.

Schauffele’s latest triumph transpired two months after he clinched the first major of his career at the PGA Championship, and while Scheffler may have more wins under his belt this season, Xander is giving him a run for his money with a résumé that boasts a dozen Top 10 finishes (including two runner-up performances) in the 18 events he’s played in so far.

One of the best parts about the Claret Jug is that it’s one of a handful of iconic trophies that you can drink out of.

During an interview with Sports Illustrated, the champ revealed he’d used it as a vessel for the red wine he shared with his dad before switching over to tequila, but it doesn’t sound like those were the only adult beverages he consumed in the wake of his win.

Schauffele had plenty of time to recover from the festivities he took part in in the wake of The Open Championship before heading to France to represent the United States at the Olympics, and prior to his first round at Le Golf National (which will kick off on Thursday), he shed some light on the repercussions of the three-day bender he went on during a media session, saying:

“I don’t really drink much alcohol. So three days in a row drinking was quite a feat for myself, and the recovery…that was also slow.

“I wear like an Oura ring or WHOOP, and for me, tracking my sleep every day—took a while for me to get my scores back to where they normally are. Put it that way.’’

Welcome to the club, Xander.
